Gas Street Basin - A Birmingham Gem!

The Birmingham Canal was completed in 1773 and terminated at Old Wharf beyond Bridge Street.

The Worcester & Birmingham Canal was built from 1795 to 1815.  In the 1990s much of the canal was restored and narrowboats can now travel along the canal without a problem. Above the Broad Street Tunnel is the renamed Black Sabbath Bridge, given the name in 2019 to celebrate 50 years of the trailblaising ‘Heavy Metal’ band.Gas Street Basin got its name from the first street in the city with gas lighting.
