History of the park

Cannon Hill Park was donated to the citizens of Birmingham by Miss Louisa Ryland who wanted the Park to be a source of healthy recreation for the people of Birmingham.  Louisa Ryland's wish was that "'the Park may prove a source of healthful recreation to the people of Birmingham, and that they will aid in the protection and preservation of what is now their property".

Louisa Ryland blue plaque

The area of Cannon Hill in Birmingham is supposedly named as it was the resting point of Royalist troops on their way to the Battle of Naseby in June 1645.

The park was designed by Mr T J Gibson who was one of the pre-eminent park designers of his day. Cannon Hill Park is home to a Grade II listed bandstand that is set in a natural amphitheatre and this was all part of the original layout.

To create the park Louisa Ryland engaged John T Gibson of Battersea to landscape the park.

John Gibson created the two large lakes we see in the park today.  In 1897, following on from Louisa Rylands example, more land was added to the park by John Holder who gave a further 7 acres of land.  Then in 1898, an additional 5 acres were acquired to straighten the channel of the River Rea. Trees along Queens Ride were planted to commemorate the deaths in World War One of 250 young men who were members of the scouting movement.

Much of Gibsons vision of Cannon Hill Park is still visible behind more modern additions present today.

There are a number of memorials and historical features within the park they include:

Amongst the memorials, sculptures and historical features at the park are The Boer War memorial, The Scout Memorial, a scaled model of the Elan Valley Reservoirs, The Golden Lion Inn (a 16th-century timbered house originally from Deritend), the Red Carriage Bridge and of course the Bandstand.

A further amazing sculpture called 'Infinate Wave', unveiled by Prince Harry, is in memory of the 31 British victims of the 2015 Sousse Terror Attack in Tunisia.

Gold winning 2023 Birmingham Parks re-creation of the Chelsea Flower Show piece at Cannon Hill Park

In May 2023, Cofton Nursery on behalf of Birmingham City Council, once again won Gold at the Chelsea Flower Show with their winning entry Birmingham Parks. In July 2023, they are re-creating it at Cannon Hill Park in Edgbaston. Located close to Mini Golf and the tennis courts. Was a rainy day when I found it.

Usually Cofton Nursery would split their Gold winning Chelsea Flower Show display between Victoria Square and Cathedral Square. But Victoria Square in Birmingham City Centre is unavailable due to the public realm works, and the renovation works at the Birmingham Council House, and Cathedral Square not used this time, maybe as the Cathedral is under scaffolding for the Divine Beauty project.

But in the past, Cofton Nursery have put previous Chelsea Flower Show winning displays in Cannon Hill Park (or part of the displays).

In July 2023, they installed a partial re-creation of their winning entry in Cannon Hill Park, located close to Mini Golf and the tennis courts.

It is called Birmingham Parks.

It was raining a lot on the walk into the park from the Pershore Road entrance (near the Wildlife Conservation Park) and the bridges near the Queen's Ride car park.

But the rain started to slow down or stop by the time I located the piece.

It looks a bit incomplete.

They will probably complete it in a few weeks time when they have more staff to do it. Looks good so far.

The Boating Lake at Cannon Hill Park: before and after de-silting the lake

In 2021, the Boating Lake and Breeding Pool was completely emptied of water around January 2021. By February 2021, you could see the surface of the lake, and all the debris on the surface. The Boating Lake at Cannon Hill Park: before and after de-silting the lake

In 2021, the Boating Lake and Breeding Pool was completely emptied of water around January 2021. By February 2021, you could see the surface of the lake, and all the debris on the surface. In the months that followed, workmen would have removed what was down there and de-silted it. By June 2021, the water is back in, and the swan boats can be used again. Lets hope it stays clean.

For the first time in 35 years, the Breeding Pool and the Boating Lake were drained of water, to de-silt them. Over the decades, people have thrown things into the lakes that have never been taken out.  This was work that was much needed to be done. Before the lakes were drained, the fish were safely removed, and care for the waterfowl that use the lakes.

The work was funded by the Council's Parks Pools Safety Programme. Work started around the weir area in January 2021, to repair the gate, and get it working, so that the pools could be emptied of water. Repairing the weir will ensure that water levels are controlled in future, if there was a risk of flooding.

The plan was to empty the pool before the waterfowl started breeding and nesting. When the silt was dry enough, it was to be dug out and spread on the existing grass areas above ground, above the pool and re-seeded.

The Boating Lake, February 2021

This was the views of the Breeding Pool and Boating Lake at Cannon Hill Park on the 19th February 2021.

dndimg alt="Boating Lake Cannon Hill Park" dndsrc="../uploadedfiles/Boating Lk Cannon Hill (Feb 2021) (1).jpg" style="width: 100%;" />

It was so weird at the time to see it without water.

dndimg alt="Boating Lake Cannon Hill Park" dndsrc="../uploadedfiles/Boating Lk Cannon Hill (Feb 2021) (2).jpg" style="width: 100%;" />

First evidence of the debris in the lake that needed to be removed. Metal objects and bricks.

This view towards the MAC (far left).

dndimg alt="Boating Lake Cannon Hill Park" dndsrc="../uploadedfiles/Boating Lk Cannon Hill (Feb 2021) (4).jpg" style="width: 100%;" />

There was still gulls on their landing railing in the middle of the lake.

dndimg alt="Boating Lake Cannon Hill Park" dndsrc="../uploadedfiles/Boating Lk Cannon Hill (Feb 2021) (5).jpg" style="width: 100%;" />

It looks like scaffolding in the water where the gulls were perched on.

dndimg alt="Boating Lake Cannon Hill Park" dndsrc="../uploadedfiles/Boating Lk Cannon Hill (Feb 2021) (6).jpg" style="width: 100%;" />

Some geese and pigeons were still around, where there was water, the waterfowl were in the lake. But a lot of debris revealed to the side of the lake.

dndimg alt="Boating Lake Cannon Hill Park" dndsrc="../uploadedfiles/Boating Lk Cannon Hill (Feb 2021) (7).jpg" style="width: 100%;" />

Hopefully all of this mess was removed in the winter or early spring.

dndimg alt="Boating Lake Cannon Hill Park" dndsrc="../uploadedfiles/Boating Lk Cannon Hill (Feb 2021) (8).jpg" style="width: 100%;" />

Fences stopping people getting too close to the lake, plus the pumping machine on the left which was used to pump out the water.

dndimg alt="Boating Lake Cannon Hill Park" dndsrc="../uploadedfiles/Boating Lk Cannon Hill (Feb 2021) (9).jpg" style="width: 100%;" />

Canada geese around all the rubbish, rain water in the lake, or water that hadn't been removed.

dndimg alt="Boating Lake Cannon Hill Park" dndsrc="../uploadedfiles/Boating Lk Cannon Hill (Feb 2021) (10).jpg" style="width: 100%;" />

During this time it was the early weeks of the third lockdown, and the swan boats were stored away.

dndimg alt="Boating Lake Cannon Hill Park" dndsrc="../uploadedfiles/Boating Lk Cannon Hill (Feb 2021) (11).jpg" style="width: 100%;" />

The Boating Lake, June 2021

Almost four months later and back at Cannon Hill Park, and I was suprised to see water back in the Boating Lake. Even the Breeding Pool had water again, and the Canada Geese had had their gosling. This visit was on the 6th June 2021, which was bit of a wet morning.

dndimg alt="Boating Lake Cannon Hill Park" dndsrc="../uploadedfiles/Boating lk CHP (Jun 2021) (1).jpg" style="width: 100%;" />

The view towards the MAC. Bins overflowing with rubbish. The day before would have been nice and sunny, and people left litter all over the field.

dndimg alt="Boating Lake Cannon Hill Park" dndsrc="../uploadedfiles/Boating lk CHP (Jun 2021) (2).jpg" style="width: 100%;" />

First view of the swan boats in a while, nice to see them back.

dndimg alt="Boating Lake Cannon Hill Park" dndsrc="../uploadedfiles/Boating lk CHP (Jun 2021) (3).jpg" style="width: 100%;" />

While rainy weather is not the best kind of weather to go on in the swan boats, there has been more sunny blue sky days so far in June, than the non-stop rain in May 2021.

dndimg alt="Boating Lake Cannon Hill Park" dndsrc="../uploadedfiles/Boating lk CHP (Jun 2021) (4).jpg" style="width: 100%;" />

On the walk back towards the Rea Valley Route, a look at the MAC and swan boats to the far right.

dndimg alt="Boating Lake Cannon Hill Park" dndsrc="../uploadedfiles/Boating lk CHP (Jun 2021) (5).jpg" style="width: 100%;" />

But the light rain was getting heavier. Canada geese on the left. Some parts of the grass was patchy, probably after having the silt on it during the winter months.

dndimg alt="Boating Lake Cannon Hill Park" dndsrc="../uploadedfiles/Boating lk CHP (Jun 2021) (6).jpg" style="width: 100%;" />

More patches of grass, but nice to see the lake full of water again.

dndimg alt="Boating Lake Cannon Hill Park" dndsrc="../uploadedfiles/Boating lk CHP (Jun 2021) (7).jpg" style="width: 100%;" />

Please can people on dry sunny days, take your litter home, don't overfill the bins, and don't leave your rubbish around the outside of the bins. As the litter pickers from the park have a lot of rubbish to pick up after you, on rainy days like this. Maybe the Council could provide much bigger bins, and empty them more frequently, to keep the premier park of the City nice and clean every day?

The Breeding Pool and Boating Lake at Cannon Hill Park

Post image

Here we look at the main lake in Cannon Hill Park. Starting with the Breeding Pool, we then go onto the main Boating Lake. Usually attracting the usual gulls, geese, swans, ducks etc. The lake closest to The MAC is used as a Boating Lake. In recent years there has been Swan Lake Boats close to The MAC. This replaced the old paddle boats that used to be in the lake until 2016.

In this post we look at the main lake in Cannon Hill Park. Called the Boating Lake. But at the southern end is the Breeding Pool. This lake runs parallel to the River Rea and Queens Ride. You would find The MAC to the north of the Boating Lake (rebuilt in 2009-10). Swan Lake Boating opened in 2016 along with a Fun Park from Green Space Leisure. Halfway in the middle of the lake is a metal bar which various birds usually perch on (mostly gulls). Paths on both sides for walking, walking your dog, pushing your childs pushchair, running and cycling. Even kids in scooters, or rollerskates or skateboards etc.

Breeding Pool

The Breeding Pool in Cannon Hill Park seen during November 2009. It is near the Ornamental Bridge. Mostly gulls at this end at the time.

dndimg alt="Breeding Pool" dndsrc="../uploadedfiles/Breeding Pool Cannon Hill Park (Nov 2009) (1).jpg" style="width: 100%;" />

The bridge is Grade II listed and dates to 1875. Made of red bricks and stone dressings.

This view of the Ornamental Bridge if you were coming from the Queens Ride end. There is also a bridge over the River Rea, but just has those painted metal railings. One of the paths from the Rea Valley Route is to the right (leads to Holders Lane Woods).

dndimg alt="Breeding Pool" dndsrc="../uploadedfiles/Cannon Hill Park (Nov 2009) (5).JPG" style="width: 100%;" />

It was foggy / misty at the Breeding Pool during April 2018.

The ornamental bridge seen during August 2019. Some geese in there at the time.

dndimg alt="Breeding Pool" dndsrc="../uploadedfiles/Breeding Pool Cannon Hill Park (August 2019).jpg" style="width: 100%;" />

In February 2020, there was a black Great Cormorant in the middle of the bird bars, with a line of gulls either side of it.

dndimg alt="Breeding Pool" dndsrc="../uploadedfiles/Boating Lake Cannon Hill Park (Feb 2020) (1).jpg" style="width: 100%;" />

The Great Cormorant was an unusual site in Cannon Hill Park.

dndimg alt="Breeding Pool" dndsrc="../uploadedfiles/Boating Lake Cannon Hill Park (Feb 2020) (2).jpg" style="width: 100%;" />

But was nice to see a bird that you don't normally see here, other than the usual gulls. There was at least two Great Cormorant there that day.

dndimg alt="Breeding Pool" dndsrc="../uploadedfiles/Boating Lake Cannon Hill Park (Feb 2020) (5).jpg" style="width: 100%;" />

In May 2020 as the lockdown restrictions were eased. Passed the Breeding Pool when I saw a Canada geese family with their newborn babies.

dndimg alt="Breeding Pool" dndsrc="../uploadedfiles/Breeding Pool Cannon Hill Park (May 2020) (1).jpg" style="width: 100%;" />

So cute! The proud Canada geese parents and their newborn gosling in the Breeding Pool.

dndimg alt="Breeding Pool" dndsrc="../uploadedfiles/Breeding Pool Cannon Hill Park (May 2020) (2).jpg" style="width: 100%;" />

There was about 7 baby gosling there on the banks of the pool. They will grow fast.

In January 2013, snow had fallen all over Birmingham and that included at Cannon Hill Park. The Boating Lake near The MAC was completely frozen and covered in snow and ice.

dndimg alt="Boating Lake" dndsrc="../uploadedfiles/Cannon Hill Park lake snow (Jan 2013) (1).jpg" style="width: 100%;" />

Even the paths were icy at the time. There may have been birds at the far end of the lake, but not at this end at the time.

At the time the Birmingham Thai Festival was being set up on the lawn near the lake. It was held on the weekend of the 28th and 29th July 2018. It hadn't rained for a month and it was quite hot.

dndimg alt="Swan Boats" dndsrc="../uploadedfiles/Boating Lake Cannon Hill Park (August 2019).jpg" style="width: 100%;" />

In February 2020, I saw all these gulls flying about above the Boating Lake towards The MAC.

dndimg alt="Boating Lake" dndsrc="../uploadedfiles/The MAC and Boating Lake CHP (Feb 2020) (1).jpg" style="width: 100%;" />

It was quite a sight to see all the gulls flying all over the place. Could even see a floodlight at Edgbaston Cricket Ground behind The MAC.

dndimg alt="Boating Lake" dndsrc="../uploadedfiles/The MAC and Boating Lake CHP (Feb 2020) (2).jpg" style="width: 100%;" />

Slightly more calm now as the gulls came to land in the lake to the left of The MAC.

The May 2020 walk past the Boating Lake, while it was quite on lockdown (before the crowds arrived in the morning). The path was empty, and the grass mown.

dndimg alt="Boating Lake" dndsrc="../uploadedfiles/Boating Lake Cannon Hill Park (May 2020) (1).jpg" style="width: 100%;" />

Saw another Canada geese family near the lakeside. At least three baby Gosling here. How cute! And some ducks.

dndimg alt="Boating Lake" dndsrc="../uploadedfiles/Boating Lake Cannon Hill Park (May 2020) (2).jpg" style="width: 100%;" />

No boats are allowed to be used during lockdown, so just the birds in the lake (and fish if there are any under the water).

dndimg alt="Boating Lake" dndsrc="../uploadedfiles/Boating Lake Cannon Hill Park (May 2020) (3).jpg" style="width: 100%;" />

But for your daily form of exercise, you can run or ride a bike (or just walk). The play area near The MAC is of course closed.

Memorials in Cannon Hill Park

Post image

There is at least three memorials now in Cannon Hill Park. Including the Boer War Memorial, also the Boy Scouts War Memorial (of 1924) near the Nature Centre. And more recently the memorial to the Sousse and Bardo Terrorist Attacks (which happened in 2015). This was unveiled by Prince Harry, Duke of Sussex in March 2019.

Memorials in Cannon Hill Park

There is at least three memorials now in Cannon Hill Park. Including the Boer War Memorial, also the Boy Scouts War Memorial (of 1924) near the Nature Centre. And more recently the memorial to the Sousse and Bardo Terrorist Attacks (which happened in 2015). This was unveiled by Prince Harry, Duke of Sussex in March 2019.

Did you know that Cannon Hill Park has three memorials within the park?

The oldest of the three was the Boer War Memorial, which is now Grade II* listed. It was sculpted by Albert Toft. It was installed in 1906. The Boer War was fought in South Africa from 1899-1902 (Joseph Chamberlain was the Minister at the time that this war broke out).

The second oldest is the Boy Scouts War Memorial, on Queens Drive, on the footpath towards the Birmingham Nature Centre. It is Grade II listed and dates to 1924 in memory of local Boy Scouts who lost their lives in the First World War. The sculptor was William Haywood. It was later modified to remember those lives lost during the Second World War.

The most recent memorial sculpture is called Infinite Wave and was unveiled in March 2019 by HRH the Duke of Sussex (Prince Harry) in memory of the victims of the 2015 Sousse and Bardo Terrorist Attacks. It was designed by George King Architects.

Boer War Memorial

The Second Boer War was fought between 1899 and 1902 between the British Empire and two independent Boer states over the Empire's influence in South Africa. At the time Birmingham's own Joseph Chamberlain was the British Colonial Secretary. The Boer War Memorial was proposed to be in either Old Square or on Corporation Street in the City Centre but this was rejected in favour of Cannon Hill Park. This decision was taken in 1904. The memorial was designed by Albert Toft and unveiled in 1906. It was cleaned and repaired in 2012. It is now Grade II* listed.

The following photos below were taken in May 2009 on my then mobile phone camera, so the bronze was looking quite green at the time.

dndimg alt="Boer War Memorial" dndsrc="../uploadedfiles/Boer War Memorial Cannon Hill Park (May 2009) (4).JPG" style="width: 100%;" />

There was a cannon at the front.

dndimg alt="Boer War Memorial" dndsrc="../uploadedfiles/Boer War Memorial Cannon Hill Park (May 2009) (3).JPG" style="width: 100%;" />

Names of the soldiers around the sides.

dndimg alt="Boer War Memorial" dndsrc="../uploadedfiles/Boer War Memorial Cannon Hill Park (May 2009) (2).JPG" style="width: 100%;" />

And at the back of the plinth.

dndimg alt="Boer War Memorial" dndsrc="../uploadedfiles/Boer War Memorial Cannon Hill Park (May 2009) (1).JPG" style="width: 100%;" />

This side has a bronze plaque inscribed "TO  THE GLORIOUS MEMORY OF THE  SONS OF BIRMINGHAM  WHO FELL IN THE SOUTH AFRICAN WAR 1899-1902  AND TO PERPETUATE  THE EXAMPLE OF ALL WHO  SERVED IN THE WAR THIS MEMORIAL IS ERECTED BY THEIR FELLOW CITIZENS" .

dndimg alt="Boer War Memorial" dndsrc="../uploadedfiles/Boer War Memorial Cannon Hill Park (May 2009) (5).JPG" style="width: 100%;" />

By November 2009, I took my first bridge camera for a photo session around Cannon Hill Park, and that meant getting new photos of the Boer War Memorial (to try and improve on the mobile shots from the previous Spring). This was the approach from the back.

dndimg alt="Boer War Memorial" dndsrc="../uploadedfiles/Boer War Memorial Cannon Hill Park (Nov 2009) (1).JPG" style="width: 100%;" />

A close up of the statue. There is a large figure of a woman in the middle. Then a pair of male soldiers either side of a cannon.

dndimg alt="Boer War Memorial" dndsrc="../uploadedfiles/Boer War Memorial Cannon Hill Park (Nov 2009) (5).JPG" style="width: 100%;" />

Further back towards the Boer War Memorial. The flower beds didn't have much in them at this point.

dndimg alt="Boer War Memorial" dndsrc="../uploadedfiles/Boer War Memorial Cannon Hill Park (Nov 2009) (6).JPG" style="width: 100%;" />

The statue was surrounded by all these benches and bins. People who sit here, probably don't even realise what this memorial is for or represents. As not many people know about the Boer War (compared to WW1 and WW2).

dndimg alt="Boer War Memorial" dndsrc="../uploadedfiles/Boer War Memorial Cannon Hill Park (Nov 2009) (7).JPG" style="width: 100%;" />

The first of three plaques with the names of fallen Birmingham soldiers from the Boer War (1899-1902).

dndimg alt="Boer War Memorial" dndsrc="../uploadedfiles/Boer War Memorial Cannon Hill Park (Nov 2009) (2).JPG" style="width: 100%;" />

The second names plaque.

dndimg alt="Boer War Memorial" dndsrc="../uploadedfiles/Boer War Memorial Cannon Hill Park (Nov 2009) (3).JPG" style="width: 100%;" />

And the third names plaque.

dndimg alt="Boer War Memorial" dndsrc="../uploadedfiles/Boer War Memorial Cannon Hill Park (Nov 2009) (4).JPG" style="width: 100%;" />

I have been back to Cannon Hill Park many times over the years since, but not got new photos of the Boer War Memorial, even after it was restored (wasn't thinking about it).

Boy Scouts War Memorial

Queen's Ride is the road / path near Cannon Hill Park, and part of it is now the public car park of the park. Beyond the bollards is this war memorial on the walk towards the entrance of what was the Birmingham Nature Centre (now Birmingham Wildlife Conservation Centre). The Boy Scouts War Memorial has been Grade II listed since 2016. It was unveiled on the 27th July 1924 in memory of the local Boy Scouts who lost their lives during the First World War. The obelisk was designed by local Birmingham architect William Hayward (1877-1957). The memorial was conserved in 2012 by the Birmingham Museums Trust and Birmingham City Council.

The following photos were taken in December 2010 when there was a light dusting of snow on the ground.

dndimg alt="Boy Scouts War Memorial" dndsrc="../uploadedfiles/Boy Scouts War Memorial Cannon Hill Park (Dec 2010) (1).JPG" style="width: 100%;" />

Close up of the Boy Scouts War Memorial. Behind you can see the bollards on the Queen's Ride (car park behind). Queen's Ride was laid out in 1897 as a riding track, and later modified in 1920 when an avenue of trees was planted to commemorate the fallen Scouts.

dndimg alt="Boy Scouts War Memorial" dndsrc="../uploadedfiles/Boy Scouts War Memorial Cannon Hill Park (Dec 2010) (2).JPG" style="width: 100%;" />

This view of the Boy Scouts War Memorial towards the trees that line the path towards the Pershore Road.

dndimg alt="Boy Scouts War Memorial" dndsrc="../uploadedfiles/Boy Scouts War Memorial Cannon Hill Park (Dec 2010) (3).JPG" style="width: 100%;" />

In the late Victorian period, it is possible that people rode their horses and carts down here, but these days it's most likely to be cyclists on their bikes. The only cars at this end (or vans) from the Council groundsmen who maintain the park. This way to the entrance of the Nature Centre.

dndimg alt="Boy Scouts War Memorial" dndsrc="../uploadedfiles/Boy Scouts War Memorial Cannon Hill Park (Dec 2010) (4).JPG" style="width: 100%;" />

Was a couple of poppy wreaths at the base of the obelisk. From the Scouts. I would assume they were laid in early November 2010.

dndimg alt="Boy Scouts War Memorial" dndsrc="../uploadedfiles/Boy Scouts War Memorial Cannon Hill Park (Dec 2010) (5).JPG" style="width: 100%;" />

I have walked this route the odd time over the years. In the summer there is always colourful flowers planted around the Boy Scouts War Memorial. This was in July 2013.

dndimg alt="Boy Scouts War Memorial" dndsrc="../uploadedfiles/Boy Scouts War Memorial Cannon Hill Park (July 2013).JPG" style="width: 100%;" />

More of the same in August 2014, red flowers, pink flowers and white flowers all the way around the obelisk.

dndimg alt="Boy Scouts War Memorial" dndsrc="../uploadedfiles/Boy Scouts War Memorial Cannon Hill Park (August 2014).JPG" style="width: 100%;" />

In July 2018 there was mostly red flowers around the obelisk. You can tell that the memorial had been restored / cleaned up compared to my earlier photos. You can even see a smiley face on this side!

dndimg alt="Boy Scouts War Memorial" dndsrc="../uploadedfiles/Boy Scouts War Memorial Cannon Hill Park (July 2018).JPG" style="width: 100%;" />

Infinite Wave

Birmingham's Cannon Hill Park was chosen to be the location of the Sousee and Bardo Memorial. It is a monument to the 31 British Nationals who lost their lives in two terrorists attacks in Tunisia in 2015. The project was commissioned by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office. It was unveiled in March 2019 by Prince Harry, Duke of Sussex at a ceremony attended by over 300 guests. The architect was George King Architects.

I initially got photos of it in late February 2019, but was still barriers around it. I later came back for a proper look at it during late May 2019.

As you can see at the end of February 2019, Infinite Wave was almost complete but was barriers around it.

dndimg alt="Infinite Wave" dndsrc="../uploadedfiles/Sousse Memorial Cannon Hill Park (February 2019) (1).jpg" style="width: 100%;" />

This was a few days before Prince Harry travelled to Birmingham to unveiled the memorial.

dndimg alt="Infinite Wave" dndsrc="../uploadedfiles/Sousse Memorial Cannon Hill Park (February 2019) (2).jpg" style="width: 100%;" />

I couldn't get too close as the barriers were also near the main path in the park, but I would return near the end of the Spring for some updates.

dndimg alt="Infinite Wave" dndsrc="../uploadedfiles/Sousse Memorial Cannon Hill Park (February 2019) (3).jpg" style="width: 100%;" />

I popped back to Cannon Hill Park near the end of May 2019 for a full look at the Sousse Memorial. Now known as Infinite Wave.

dndimg alt="Infinite Wave" dndsrc="../uploadedfiles/Infinite Wave Cannon Hill Park (May 2019) (1).JPG" style="width: 100%;" />

There is a path that leads up to the memorial sculpture.

dndimg alt="Infinite Wave" dndsrc="../uploadedfiles/Infinite Wave Cannon Hill Park (May 2019) (2).JPG" style="width: 100%;" />

Like with the other memorials in the park, there was this metal memorial plaque listing the naems of the victims of the Sousse and Bardo Terrorist Attacks.

dndimg alt="Infinite Wave" dndsrc="../uploadedfiles/Infinite Wave Cannon Hill Park (May 2019) (3).JPG" style="width: 100%;" />

Now time to walk around the wavey sculpture.

dndimg alt="Infinite Wave" dndsrc="../uploadedfiles/Infinite Wave Cannon Hill Park (May 2019) (4).JPG" style="width: 100%;" />

It meant going off the path and onto the grass.

dndimg alt="Infinite Wave" dndsrc="../uploadedfiles/Infinite Wave Cannon Hill Park (May 2019) (5).JPG" style="width: 100%;" />

It looks a bit like a spring, or one of those toys that you can push down the stairs, or between your hands.

dndimg alt="Infinite Wave" dndsrc="../uploadedfiles/Infinite Wave Cannon Hill Park (May 2019) (6).JPG" style="width: 100%;" />

It forms 31 individual streams, one for each victim who lost their lives in the attacks.

dndimg alt="Infinite Wave" dndsrc="../uploadedfiles/Infinite Wave Cannon Hill Park (May 2019) (7).JPG" style="width: 100%;" />

There is an area in the middle that visitors can stand in and admire the memorial.

dndimg alt="Infinite Wave" dndsrc="../uploadedfiles/Infinite Wave Cannon Hill Park (May 2019) (8).JPG" style="width: 100%;" />

Young children would probably run around in circles and have fun.

dndimg alt="Infinite Wave" dndsrc="../uploadedfiles/Infinite Wave Cannon Hill Park (May 2019) (9).JPG" style="width: 100%;" />

It pretty much looks the same on the other side.

dndimg alt="Infinite Wave" dndsrc="../uploadedfiles/Infinite Wave Cannon Hill Park (May 2019) (10).JPG" style="width: 100%;" />

I wonder if when the pandemic ends, if the Government would consider having a memorial here for those lost to the virus? What kind of memorial would you like to see in Cannon Hill Park for that?

Cannon Hill Park through the seasons and over the years

Post image

I've taken hundreds and hundreds of photos of Cannon Hill Park over the years, so here will cut down to a selection of them. Of course I've been going to this park since I was little. But started taking photos of it in 2009. In winter, spring, summer or autumn always changing. Sometimes the same. Good for a walk. Many memorials here as well. Playgrounds and fun fairs. The MAC etc.

Cannon Hill Park through the seasons and over the years

I've taken hundreds and hundreds of photos of Cannon Hill Park over the years, so here will cut down to a selection of them. Of course I've been going to this park since I was little. But started taking photos of it in 2009. In winter, spring, summer or autumn always changing. Sometimes the same. Good for a walk. Many memorials here as well. Playgrounds and fun fairs. The MAC etc.

Have a look at my Flickr album on Cannon Hill Park. If I take more photos, I will add them to that album.

2009

This was during May 2009. One of the earlier road trains that goes around the park.

dndimg alt="Cannon Hill Park" dndsrc="../uploadedfiles/Cannon Hill Park (May 2009) (1).JPG" style="width: 100%;" />

The playground that is near the boating lake (if you went past the Midlands Art Centre / MAC).

dndimg alt="Cannon Hill Park" dndsrc="../uploadedfiles/Cannon Hill Park (May 2009) (2).JPG" style="width: 100%;" />

This playground used to have a big ramp for kids to run along on.

dndimg alt="Cannon Hill Park" dndsrc="../uploadedfiles/Cannon Hill Park (May 2009) (3).JPG" style="width: 100%;" />

This was during November 2009. Flower red with a circular pyramid of pots. Still some flowers even at that time of year.

dndimg alt="Cannon Hill Park" dndsrc="../uploadedfiles/Cannon Hill Park (Nov 2009) (1).JPG" style="width: 100%;" />

Looking over the boating lake towards the playground. The cricket towers had yet to get refurbished / redcladded (Wickets Tower and Century Tower). They were given a white look in 2012.

dndimg alt="Cannon Hill Park" dndsrc="../uploadedfiles/Cannon Hill Park (Nov 2009) (2).JPG" style="width: 100%;" />

Looking over the field in the park  towards the playground and boating lake.

dndimg alt="Cannon Hill Park" dndsrc="../uploadedfiles/Cannon Hill Park (Nov 2009) (3).JPG" style="width: 100%;" />

Bridge over the lake. It exits towards the car park over another bridge (that crossed the River Rea). Over here you find many geese and gulls.

dndimg alt="Cannon Hill Park" dndsrc="../uploadedfiles/Cannon Hill Park (Nov 2009) (4).JPG" style="width: 100%;" />

2010

This was during early December 2010 when Cannon Hill Park was covered in snow and all the lakes were frozen over.

dndimg alt="Cannon Hill Park" dndsrc="../uploadedfiles/Cannon Hill Park frozen lake (Dec 2010) (1).JPG" style="width: 100%;" />

Hardly anyone around as the boating lake was covered in a complete layer of ice.

dndimg alt="Cannon Hill Park" dndsrc="../uploadedfiles/Cannon Hill Park frozen lake (Dec 2010) (2).JPG" style="width: 100%;" />

Canada geese and gulls were able to stand on it. Was a section of open water near the start of the boating lake.

dndimg alt="Cannon Hill Park" dndsrc="../uploadedfiles/Cannon Hill Park frozen lake (Dec 2010) (3).JPG" style="width: 100%;" />

Just look at these Canada geese on the ice!

dndimg alt="Cannon Hill Park" dndsrc="../uploadedfiles/Cannon Hill Park frozen lake (Dec 2010) (4).JPG" style="width: 100%;" />

This is the second lake in the park. Also iced over. Known as the Canoe Pool according to Google Map.s

dndimg alt="Cannon Hill Park" dndsrc="../uploadedfiles/Cannon Hill Park frozen lake (Dec 2010) (5).JPG" style="width: 100%;" />

Seagulls flying around near this lake in early winter.

dndimg alt="Cannon Hill Park" dndsrc="../uploadedfiles/Cannon Hill Park frozen lake (Dec 2010) (6).JPG" style="width: 100%;" />

2011

Skipping ahead to April 2011. And was many spring flowers to see in the flower beds. Reds, yellows, purples etc.

dndimg alt="Cannon Hill Park" dndsrc="../uploadedfiles/Cannon Hill Park (April 2011) (1).JPG" style="width: 100%;" />

A yellow flower bed.

dndimg alt="Cannon Hill Park" dndsrc="../uploadedfiles/Cannon Hill Park (April 2011) (2).JPG" style="width: 100%;" />

Around this stone base or plinth was yellow, red, orange and pink coloured flowers.

dndimg alt="Cannon Hill Park" dndsrc="../uploadedfiles/Cannon Hill Park (April 2011) (3).JPG" style="width: 100%;" />

Pink tulips and yellow flowers in this flower bed around a lamppost.

dndimg alt="Cannon Hill Park" dndsrc="../uploadedfiles/Cannon Hill Park (April 2011) (4).JPG" style="width: 100%;" />

Palm trees in one area of the park. Maybe the wrong time of year to see them.

dndimg alt="Cannon Hill Park" dndsrc="../uploadedfiles/Cannon Hill Park (April 2011) (5).JPG" style="width: 100%;" />

Many of the tulips were to be seen near the Russell Road entrance of the park. Pink ones here.

dndimg alt="Cannon Hill Park" dndsrc="../uploadedfiles/Cannon Hill Park (April 2011) (7).JPG" style="width: 100%;" />

Red tulips. Making the park look colourful.

dndimg alt="Cannon Hill Park" dndsrc="../uploadedfiles/Cannon Hill Park (April 2011) (6).JPG" style="width: 100%;" />

Another view of the pink tulips with yellow flowers.

dndimg alt="Cannon Hill Park" dndsrc="../uploadedfiles/Cannon Hill Park (April 2011) (7).JPG" style="width: 100%;" />

2013

This was in July 2013. Don't think I got anything in 2012. Any way this time of the year was a lot of colourful summer flowrs. Yellows and reds in the flower beds.

dndimg alt="Cannon Hill Park" dndsrc="../uploadedfiles/Cannon Hill Park flower beds (July 2013) (1).JPG" style="width: 100%;" />

Probably the same flower beds I took in the Spring 2011 photo. Just different flowers. Yellow flowers around the lamppost. Pinks in the flower beds behind.

dndimg alt="Cannon Hill Park" dndsrc="../uploadedfiles/Cannon Hill Park flower beds (July 2013) (2).JPG" style="width: 100%;" />

A lot of red in these flower beds, plus several flower towers and a bit of yellow.

dndimg alt="Cannon Hill Park" dndsrc="../uploadedfiles/Cannon Hill Park flower beds (July 2013) (3).JPG" style="width: 100%;" />

White and pinks I think in this flower bed.

dndimg alt="Cannon Hill Park" dndsrc="../uploadedfiles/Cannon Hill Park flower beds (July 2013) (4).JPG" style="width: 100%;" />

These ones in the direction of the Boer War Memorial. Yellows, purples and pinks here.

dndimg alt="Cannon Hill Park" dndsrc="../uploadedfiles/Cannon Hill Park flower beds (July 2013) (5).JPG" style="width: 100%;" />

2016

Ice cream van seen in March 2016. From the car park that runs along Queen's Ride. The footbridge over the River Rea is to the left and you head into the park from there. Verrecchia freshly whipped Italian ice cream.

dndimg alt="Cannon Hill Park" dndsrc="../uploadedfiles/Cannon Hill Park ice cream van (March 2016).jpg" style="width: 100%;" />

Macro of a red tulip seen during May 2016.

dndimg alt="Cannon Hill Park" dndsrc="../uploadedfiles/Cannon Hill Park tulip (May 2016) (1).jpg" style="width: 100%;" />

And of a yellow tulip. Wonderful to see in April or May of every year.

dndimg alt="Cannon Hill Park" dndsrc="../uploadedfiles/Cannon Hill Park tulip (May 2016) (2).jpg" style="width: 100%;" />

Also this orangey yellow tulip.

dndimg alt="Cannon Hill Park" dndsrc="../uploadedfiles/Cannon Hill Park tulip (May 2016) (3).jpg" style="width: 100%;" />

2017

Wonderful display of Spring flowers and tulips during April 2017. Yellows, oranges and reds (I think).

dndimg alt="Cannon Hill Park" dndsrc="../uploadedfiles/Cannon Hill Park spring flowers (April 2017) (1) .jpg" style="width: 100%;" />

Pink and purple tulips.

dndimg alt="Cannon Hill Park" dndsrc="../uploadedfiles/Cannon Hill Park spring flowers (April 2017) (3) .jpg" style="width: 100%;" />

Flower towers and more of the pink and yellow tulips all over this large flower bed.

dndimg alt="Cannon Hill Park" dndsrc="../uploadedfiles/Cannon Hill Park spring flowers (April 2017) (5) .jpg" style="width: 100%;" />

Close up of the purple and pink tulips. Red and yellow coloured flowers below.

dndimg alt="Cannon Hill Park" dndsrc="../uploadedfiles/Cannon Hill Park spring flowers (April 2017) (7) .jpg" style="width: 100%;" />

They do a good job every year with these flower displays, especially over the spring and summer periods. A lot of reds here.

dndimg alt="Cannon Hill Park" dndsrc="../uploadedfiles/Cannon Hill Park spring flowers (April 2017) (9) .jpg" style="width: 100%;" />

2018

Tourist road train seen during July 2018. That summer I'd been to Tuscany in Italy. So I saw road trains like this in Pisa. But I've seen similar over the years elsewhere on holiday as well.

dndimg alt="Cannon Hill Park" dndsrc="../uploadedfiles/Road train Cannon Hill Park (July 2018) (3).jpg" style="width: 100%;" />

That summer the grass was quite yellow after a long heatwave in July of that year.

dndimg alt="Cannon Hill Park" dndsrc="../uploadedfiles/Road train Cannon Hill Park (July 2018) (2).jpg" style="width: 100%;" />

Get some Italian ice cream. I was probably still uploading my Tuscany and Florence photos to Flickr at that time. Hopefully will go back to Italy again next year?

dndimg alt="Cannon Hill Park" dndsrc="../uploadedfiles/Road train Cannon Hill Park (July 2018) (1).jpg" style="width: 100%;" />

Now it was during October 2018. The palm trees were looking OK. The garden that is supposed to be a bit like Ancient Rome or Greece?

dndimg alt="Cannon Hill Park" dndsrc="../uploadedfiles/Cannon Hill Park palm trees (Oct 2018) (1) .jpg" style="width: 100%;" />

More palm trees and columns. This area is on the left as you enter the park from Edgbaston Road.

dndimg alt="Cannon Hill Park" dndsrc="../uploadedfiles/Cannon Hill Park palm trees (Oct 2018) (2) .jpg" style="width: 100%;" />

2019

A visit during February 2019. The sky was blue and the grass was green. Yet it was still winter. No leaves on the trees. View towards the boating lake.

dndimg alt="Cannon Hill Park" dndsrc="../uploadedfiles/Cannon Hill Park blue sky (Feb 2019) (1) .jpg" style="width: 100%;" />

Nice shadows from the trees on the field as families enjoy the sunshine in the winter. View towards The MAC.

dndimg alt="Cannon Hill Park" dndsrc="../uploadedfiles/Cannon Hill Park blue sky (Feb 2019) (2) .jpg" style="width: 100%;" />

Passing through the park in August 2019. A water jet fountain at the crazy golf course had gone sky blue.

dndimg alt="Cannon Hill Park" dndsrc="../uploadedfiles/Cannon Hill Park summer (August 2019) (1) .jpg" style="width: 100%;" />

A cyclist going past the wonderful flower beds. This was close to the Edgbaston Road entrance that I was heading to. A walk that started from Highbury Park and went in the back entrance via the Holders Lane Woods and the Rea Valley Route.

dndimg alt="Cannon Hill Park" dndsrc="../uploadedfiles/Cannon Hill Park summer (August 2019) (2) .jpg" style="width: 100%;" />

I'll probably do more Cannon Hill Park posts in the future. Got more material, such as the war memorials.
